National Guard deployed to contain violent incidents in New York subway system
Muslim Network TV news:
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has announced the deployment of 750 National Guard members to address a surge in violent incidents within the city subway system.
Additionally, 250 state troopers and police officers will conduct bag searches for weapons.
The decision comes amid a significant increase in crimes such as grand larcenies and pickpocketing, prompting New York City Mayor Eric Adams to deploy additional officers in February.
Recent incidents include a fatal shooting and a train conductor being slashed.
Hockhul’s initiative aims to enhance safety for commuters and transit workers, following recent high-profile crimes.
Her strategy includes a legislative proposal to ban people convicted of assaulting subway passengers from trains for three years, along with the installation of cameras in conductor cabins.
Despite concerns raised by some regarding civil liberties, the move is part of a broader effort to address subway safety.
