Muslim Shelter Open In Tijuana
Three years ago, a Latino-Muslim nonprofit began raising funds to open the first Muslim shelter for refugees and asylum seekers in Tijuana.
On Saturday, the shelter opened its doors, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Sonia García, president of the Latina Muslim Foundation, said the project “took a lot of faith, money, effort and patience.”
She said nearly $500,000 was raised from community donations for the shelter.
The nonprofit based in San Diego and Tijuana said the two-story shelter is located in Tijuana’s Zona Norte close to the U.S.-Mexico border.
The 8,000-square-foot facility can serve up to 150 asylum seekers.
It currently houses 30 people.
García grew up Catholic and converted to Islam.
She has worked in migrant shelters in Tijuana where she became aware of the growing number of Muslim asylum seekers.
