Muslim scholars call for justice for Tunisian opposition leader
TUNIS, Tunisia – A group of Muslim scholars has urged Tunisian authorities to release former parliamentary speaker Rached Ghannouchi and other political prisoners.
A Tunisian court had sentenced Ghannouchi, who is one of the main opponents of President Kais Saied, to one year in prison on May 15 on terrorism charges.
The International Union of Muslim Scholars (IUMS) pleaded for justice for Ghannouchi and other political prisoners.
It called on Muslim scholars worldwide to urgently advocate for justice for the Tunisian opposition leader.
He was arrested on April 17 on charges of conspiring against state security.
Ghannouchi was the parliamentary speaker before the parliament was dissolved by Saied in July 2021.
He represented Ennahdha, a political party that held a majority in parliament.
