Muslim rights group urges Senate to reject amendment targeting Palestinian immigrants
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) has called on the Senate to oppose a recent House amendment to halt funding for President Joe Biden’s directive to delay deportation orders for Palestinians.
Sponsored by Rep. Andy Ogles, the amendment narrowly passed the House with a 204-203 vote on June 26.
Critics, like Rep. Lauren Underwood, argue that deporting Palestinians would expose them to perilous conditions in war-torn areas, emphasizing the Gaza humanitarian crisis.
CAIR’s Government Affairs Department Coordinator Shafiquil Muhshna condemned the amendment, warning it could force Palestinians back into life-threatening circumstances.
Biden’s executive order aimed to protect about 6,000 Palestinians from immediate deportation, acknowledging the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza.
CAIR insists that sending Palestinians back under current conditions would be inhumane and potentially lethal.
