PARIS, France (MNTV) – The curtains have closed on the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics, marking an achievement for Muslim athletes who secured a total of 66 medals.
These include 20 gold, 19 silver, and 27 bronze, as per the latest survey of the medal tally.
The women’s marathon saw a stunning victory by Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands, clinching gold, with Tigst Assefa of Ethiopia taking silver.
In the men’s freestyle wrestling events, Iran’s Rahman Amouzadkhalili won silver in the 65kg category, while Albania’s Islam Dudaev secured bronze.
Arshad Nadeem, a Pakistani javelin thrower, captured international acclaim by clinching the gold medal in the men’s javelin throw at the 2024 Summer Olympics.
His remarkable throw of 92.97 metres (305.0 ft) set a new Olympic record.
This landmark victory not only crowned him as the Olympic champion but also represented a significant milestone for Pakistan, marking the country’s first Olympic gold in athletics in 32 years.
Bahrain’s Akhmed Tazhudinov grabbed gold in the men’s freestyle 97kg wrestling, with Magomedkhan Magomedov of Azerbaijan and Iran’s Amirali Azarpira earning bronze.
Uzbekistan’s athletes also delivered outstanding performances, with Abdumalik Khalokov winning gold in men’s 57kg boxing and Bakhodir Jalolov dominating the men’s +92kg category, claiming gold.
Egypt celebrated Ahmed Elgendy’s gold in modern pentathlon, while Iran’s Arian Salimi took gold in men’s +80kg taekwondo.
Ethiopia’s Tamirat Tola crossed the finish line first in the men’s marathon, bringing home another gold.
In the track and field events, Algeria’s Djamel Sedjati won bronze in the men’s 800m, and Qatar’s Mutaz Barshim added a bronze to his collection in the men’s high jump.
In weightlifting, Uzbekistan’s Akbar Djuraev earned silver in the men’s 102 kg category, while Bahrain’s Gor Minasyan captured bronze.
The wrestling arena was dominated by Muslim athletes, with Uzbekistan’s Razambek Zhamalov winning gold in the men’s freestyle 74kg, and Bulgaria’s Magomed Eldarovitch Ramazanov securing gold in the men’s freestyle 86 kg.
Turkish pistol shooter Yusuf Dikec captured global attention with his laid-back shooting style, leading to a silver medal in the mixed team 10-meter air pistol event.
Images of the 51-year-old, casually shooting in a T-shirt with one hand in his pocket, sparked a wave of memes comparing him to a regular guy or even a hitman.
Despite his relaxed appearance, Dikec is a seasoned Olympian, having competed in every Summer Games since 2008.
He, along with Sevval Ilayda Tarhan, made history by securing Turkey’s first-ever Olympic shooting medal.
Dikec’s Serbian opponents, who wore more traditional shooting gear, won gold, while India claimed bronze.
While Dikec’s casual look drew attention, he did use yellow earplugs to block out distractions, a detail not visible in the viral images.
The Paris Olympics witnessed unprecedented participation, with 10,500 athletes from 206 countries competing across 32 sports and 339 events.
The 2024 Games also marked a significant milestone with an equal gender split among athletes for the first time.
Notably, the International Olympic Committee allowed Muslim participants to wear the hijab during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, though restrictions remained for French athletes under their sports federation rules.
France played host for a sixth time in 2024. The United States has hosted the most Olympics eight times. It will again host the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
