Mother Of Pakistan’s Orphans, Bilquis Edhi Dies
Known for her compassion and selfless work, Bilquis Bano Edhi died Friday evening at Karachi, Pakistan’s Aga Khan Hospital.
The 74-year-old was a mother to thousands of orphans across Pakistan, and a recipient of the Mother Teresa Memorial Award for Social Justice.
She was also awarded the Hilal-i-Imtiaz, Pakistan’s recognition for the highest degree of service to the state.
Edhi was the widow of the late Abdul Sattar Edhi, who founded the world’s largest volunteer ambulance network, as well as the Edhi Foundation in 1951.
Through her work, she was a caretaker of an estimated 42,000 babies abandoned mainly due to poverty.
Edhi was suffering from multiple ailments, including a heart condition and lung infection, according to her grandson Ahmed Edhi.
