Morocco to showcase handicrafts in global events
With its investment in human potential and local talent through integrating new players in the sector, Morocco is set to portray its handicraft wonders at global events held at the country
RABAT, Morocco (MNTV) – Morocco is preparing to spotlight its rich handicraft heritage on the global stage as it gears up to host the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) and co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking before the House of Representatives, Lahcen Essaadi, Secretary of State in charge of Handicrafts and Social and Solidarity Economy, emphasized the crucial role that Morocco’s ancestral craftsmanship could play in both international sporting events.
He highlighted the economic and cultural opportunities these tournaments offer, not only for the handicrafts sector but also for the social economy and tourism industry.
Essaadi noted that major sporting competitions present a unique opportunity to attract investment and stimulate direct and indirect job creation.
By integrating Moroccan handicrafts into the events, the country aims to enhance its global appeal while strengthening local industries.
As part of the 2025/2026 and 2030 action plan, Morocco will establish dedicated exhibition and sales spaces in host cities, allowing visitors to experience live craftsmanship demonstrations.
Additionally, mobile stands and souvenir stores will be set up in stadiums and fan zones to offer locally made artisan products to international fans.
Moroccan handicrafts hold a significant place in the national economy, contributing to both exports and employment.
Essaadi revealed that in 2024, handicraft exports surpassed $110.7 million, marking a 3% increase.
Pottery remains the top export, followed by carpets and traditional clothing, demonstrating the continued global demand for Moroccan artisanal goods.
Beyond handicrafts, Essaadi underscored the importance of the social and solidarity economy, particularly in supporting youth, women, and rural communities.
The government’s strategy for this sector is based on three key pillars: adapting to new challenges through diversified initiatives, organizing stakeholders by leveraging local potential, and expanding the sector by integrating new players.
By blending sports and tradition, the country aims to leave a lasting impression on visitors while strengthening its artisanal and social economy sectors for years to come.
