Morocco expands healthcare access for vulnerable populations
Program aims to alleviate the population from substandard working conditions to give them access to modern healthcare
RABAT, Morocco (MNTV) – Morocco’s “AMO Tadamon” system is revolutionizing healthcare access for vulnerable populations across the country.
Launched as part of the nation’s social protection reforms, the system aims to provide equitable healthcare coverage, benefiting approximately 11.1 million individuals, including dependents, as of December 2022.
The Assurance Maladie Obligatoire (AMO) system, with “Tadamon” meaning solidarity in Arabic, ensures free medical care and hospitalization in public health facilities for those covered.
This initiative significantly reduces out-of-pocket healthcare expenses for economically disadvantaged citizens.
By January 2024, the system had processed over 527,000 medical care files, totaling $59 million in expenditures.
Additionally, 43,000 drug expense certificates were issued, amounting to $63 million in support.
These benefits extend to vulnerable groups, including low-income families and the elderly, providing them with access to essential medical services without financial barriers.
To support those unable to pay, the Moroccan government allocates $950 million annually to cover their contributions.
The system has also expanded to include self-employed workers, with 1.7 million individuals enrolled by January 2025.
This brings the total number of beneficiaries to 3.9 million people, ensuring broader coverage across the population.
A key feature of the AMO Tadamon system is its digital platform, launched in December 2023. Nearly 4 million families have registered, benefiting around 12 million individuals, including 5.4 million children and 1.2 million elderly citizens.
The digitalization of the program has streamlined the registration and claims processes, making healthcare more accessible.
Looking ahead, the program’s budget is set to increase from $2.5 billion in 2024 to $2.9 billion by 2026, ensuring the long-term sustainability of Morocco’s healthcare reforms.
By prioritizing healthcare coverage for vulnerable populations, the AMO Tadamon system plays a critical role in Morocco’s ongoing efforts to create a more inclusive and equitable society.
