More than 50 dead as rains, floods ravage eastern India
Severe rainfall and consequent floods have unleashed havoc across eastern India, killing over 50 people and displacing millions.
Assam and Nagaland provinces are among the worst-hit states, where incessant rains have triggered floods and landslides.
In Assam alone, recent floods have caused eight more fatalities, bringing this year’s toll to 56.
Over 1.6 million people across 27 districts are grappling with the aftermath, seeking refuge in 515 relief camps.
Nagaland has also suffered significant losses, with at least five deaths reported due to rain-related incidents.
Landslides have blocked key roads, isolating several villages, while warnings against fishing and picnicking have been issued to curb further casualties.
Meanwhile, in Arunachal Pradesh, the essential Itanagar-Jote highway remains closed due to widespread landslides, cutting off many districts from the mainland.
The region’s infrastructure, including power and communication networks, has been severely disrupted, intensifying the humanitarian crisis caused by the relentless monsoon downpours.
