More Than 160M children Worldwide In Child Labor
More than 160 million children are engaged in child labor globally, according to a new report released Wednesday.
The International Labor Organization and U.N. children’s agency UNICEF warn in the report that without relief strategies, child labor could rise by 8.9 million by year end.
The increase is driven by higher poverty and increased vulnerability.
Children need social protection, which reduces family poverty and vulnerability, diminishing critical drivers of child labor, the agencies said.
The groups called for closing the social protection coverage gap for 1.5 billion children worldwide still unsupported by family or child cash benefits.
