Millions of Americans brace for another sweltering summer
As summer approaches, millions of Americans are being warned of the looming threat of extreme heat, particularly in northern states known for milder summers.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicts a 60% to 70% chance of hotter-than-normal weather in parts of New Mexico, Utah, Arizona, Texas, and Colorado.
Recent heat spikes in Houston, attributed to a persistent heat dome, emphasize the dangers, compounded by a powerful storm that caused casualties and power outages.
NOAA’s Heat Risk tool highlights the severity of the situation, with parts of southern Texas experiencing “extreme” heat.
Concerns also have been raised over the lack of protective labor laws as 2,000 workers annually succumb to heat-related illnesses.
Scientists say climate change is worsening extreme weather events globally.
