Migrants deported from US arrive in El Salvador
A flight carrying deported migrants from the United States landed in El Salvador’s capital, San Salvador, on Wednesday.
This marks the first transfer under a new agreement between the administrations of President Donald Trump and Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele.
Bukele met with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in the capital to discuss key bilateral issues, including illegal migration.
During the meeting, Rubio announced a historic deal under which El Salvador will accept undocumented migrants of any nationality who have committed crimes on U.S. soil.
State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce confirmed that Bukele has agreed to take back all Salvadoran MS-13 gang members currently living unlawfully in the U.S.
Additionally, El Salvador has pledged to incarcerate violent illegal immigrants, including members of the Venezuelan Tren de Aragua gang, as well as migrants from other countries.
Authorities in San Salvador have begun processing the deported migrants as part of the implementation of this new agreement between the two nations.
Analysts say the deal represents a deepening of U.S.-El Salvador relations and a shift in migration policies, as both countries work together on security and border enforcement.
