Migrant crisis takes an ugly turn in New York
Mayor Eric Adams’ office says that more than 3,000 sites for migrant housing are being considered
NEW YORK – The migrant crisis in New York took an ugly turn Sunday when violent clashes broke out between those who support asylum seekers and those who do not.
Several people were arrested at the protest site in front of Gracie Mansion.
The founder of Guardian Angels, Curtis Sliwa, who had proposed housing for asylum seekers on Riker’s Island, was also arrested.
The protesters want the migrants to be considered human beings, no different from anyone else.
Mayor Eric Adams’ office has said that more than 3,000 sites for migrant housing are being considered and that all options – including Riker’s – are up for debate.
His office said New York City has been left largely alone in dealing with a national crisis that requires difficult decisions.
The mayor’s office said the city has opened 206 sites, including 15 large-scale humanitarian relief centers, and is constantly looking for new places to shelter asylum seekers.
