Mexico pushes back on Trump’s ‘Gulf of America’ move
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum says her government will send a letter to Google over President Donald Trump’s order renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America.”
Trump signed the order immediately after taking office on January 20.
Sheinbaum questioned Google Maps’ role in reflecting international boundaries and naming conventions.
She earlier joked about renaming North America as “America Mexicana” but now insists the U.S. has no right to change the gulf’s name, as much of it lies in international waters.
Google confirmed it will display “Gulf of America” for U.S. users, while it remains “Gulf of Mexico” in Mexico.
Users outside both countries will see both names.
