Meta’s oversight board deluged with comments over ‘River to Sea’ debate
Meta’s Oversight Board has received more than 2,300 comments relating to the use of the phrase “from the river to the sea” on Facebook and Instagram in the context of activism and self-determination for Palestine.
The 22-member board is still deciding whether the phrase constitutes hate speech.
This is specifically in the context of its interpretation by Zionists and supporters of Israel as a call for Israel’s elimination.
The surge in comments marks the second-highest response ever received by the social media giant’s board, following the case of former President Trump’s account suspension.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations has submitted a comment in defense of the phrase, which it describes as a call for advancing Palestinian human rights.
The board, which includes law professors, former government officials, and Nobel Peace Prize recipient Tawakkol Karman of Yemen, will issue a decision within 90 days.
