Massive crowds join Biswa Ijtema in Bangladesh
Tens of thousands of Muslims gathered near Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka for the annual Biswa Ijtema, one of the largest Islamic congregations in the world.
The three-day event takes place on the banks of the Turag River in Tongi.
Devotees from across Bangladesh and 72 other countries are attending the congregation with scholars from India, Pakistan, and beyond delivering sermons.
This is the first phase of the event, which will conclude Sunday with mass prayers.
The second phase runs Feb. 3-5, followed by a third phase Feb. 14-16.
Security is tight, with checkpoints, cameras, and plainclothes officers deployed.
Authorities say there are no specific threats but ensure strict safety measures.
Biswa Ijtema has been a tradition since the 1950s, bringing together Muslims in faith and prayer.
More people continue to arrive, preparing for the final grand prayer on Sunday.
