Many feared dead after gunmen attack church in southwestern Nigeria
KANO, Nigeria (AA) – Many people are feared dead after gunmen opened fire on worshippers at a church in Nigeria’s southwestern Ondo state, officials said.
The attack occurred at St. Francis Catholic Church in the town of Owo.
Officials at the Federal Medical Center in Owo said at least 50 injured people were rushed to the hospital.
Ondo State Governor Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu expressed sorrow over the incident and extended condolences over the loss of lives.
Speaking to Anadolu Agency, Richard Olatunde, chief press secretary to the governor, said that the “vile and satanic attack” is a calculated assault on the peace-loving people of Owo who have enjoyed relative peace over the years.
“It is a black Sunday in Owo. Our hearts are heavy. Our peace and tranquility have been attacked by the enemies of the people. This is a personal loss, an attack on our dear state,” Olatunde said.
“I urge our people to remain calm and vigilant. Do not take laws into your hands,” he added.
