Many Existing Oil And Gas Sites Must Be Shut Down To Avert Climate Disaster
Keeping global warming below the 1.5°C threshold by the end of the century will require halting construction of new fossil fuel infrastructure and closing many existing sites.
That’s according to a new study published Tuesday in the journal Environmental Research Letters.
“Some existing fossil fuel licenses and production will need to be revoked and phased out early,” the study says.
It estimates 40% of fossil fuel reserves at currently operational development sites worldwide must be left in the ground.
Only then will the world have a 50-50 chance of adequately slashing carbon emissions and limiting warming to 1.5°C or below.
