Maldives to establish libraries in Islamic centers across the country
MALE, Maldives (MNTV) — The Maldives government will begin establishing libraries in Islamic centers across the country this year as part of efforts to enhance their role in education and community engagement, Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed announced, according to PSM News.
Speaking at a signing ceremony for the construction of an Islamic center in Milandhoo, Shaviyani Atoll, the minister emphasized that while Islamic centers exist in many islands, they have not been fully utilized. To maximize their impact, the government has introduced academic courses from the Islamic University of Maldives at centers in Thinadhoo, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, and Ungoofaaru, Raa Atoll. Plans are also in place to establish libraries in all existing Islamic centers across the country.
“The first library is being set up at the Salman Centre, and we are working to open it next month. After that, libraries will be established in Thinadhoo and Ungoofaaru,” Shaheem said.
The minister also provided updates on ongoing Islamic center projects, including those in Addu City and Dhidhdhoo, Haa Alifu Atoll, both of which are expected to be completed this year.
The signing ceremony, reported by PSM News, marked the handover of the Milandhoo Islamic Center construction project to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC). The contract was signed by Shaheem on behalf of the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, while MTCC Managing Director Ahmed Saudhy represented the company. The project will be executed under a design-and-build contract.
Shaheem said the Milandhoo Islamic Center is being developed in response to requests from residents and as part of President Mohamed Muizzu’s pledges. He expressed hope that the project would be completed as soon as possible.
MTCC, which is currently managing about 400 projects, will prioritize the Islamic center’s construction, Saudhy said, assuring that the work will be completed within the contractual deadline.
