Malaysian writers shine at Moondance International Film Festival
Amina Jindani and Gavin Yap take home top honor for their short film Derek Kong, Private Detective: The Crimson Lipstick Bytes
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (MNTV) — Malaysian screenwriters Amina Jindani and Gavin Yap have won the prestigious Feature Screenplay Award at the Moondance International Film Festival.
They won the award for their short film Derek Kong, Private Detective: The Crimson Lipstick Bytes.
Their victory is significant as they triumphed over two American screenplays in the category, with Malaysia emerging as the only Asian nation to receive an award at the festival.
In a statement, Yap shared insights into the film’s narrative: “The story follows the eccentric private detective Derek Kong as he investigates a seemingly simple extra-marital affair.”
“However, the case quickly evolves into a surreal journey through love, fantasy, betrayal, and redemption, compelling Derek to confront his own perceptions of these deeply human experiences,” he explained.
This win highlights the growing recognition of Malaysian talent in the global film industry, marking a proud moment for the nation’s creative community.
