Major U.S. travel companies promote travel to China’s Xinjiang region
While some companies do not approve of Beijing’s actions, they argue that travel does not equate to support for government policies
WASHINGTON – Major travel companies continue to advertise travel to China’s Uyghur-Muslim dominated Xinjiang region despite reports of widespread human rights abuses there.
According to a study by the Washington-based Uyghur Human Rights Project, these trips support Beijing’s alleged attempts to eradicate Uyghur culture.
They also spread the misleading message that the region is free of problems.
Henryk Szadziewski, the author of the report, calls on all travel companies to immediately stop offering tours to the region.
The companies named include the US company Abercrombie & Kent, Bamboo Travel from the UK and Laurus Travel from Canada.
Since the report was published, the Canadian company Goway Travel and the Australian company Intrepid Travel have also stopped offering travel to Xinjiang.
The U.S. and several other countries accuse Beijing of serious human rights abuses in the region, with a U.N. report last year suggesting possible crimes against humanity.
Beijing denies those allegations.
While some companies do not approve of Beijing’s actions, they argue that travel does not equate to support for government policies.
