Major archaeological breakthrough in Türkiye
Discovery of an intact statue of Greek god Hermes reaffirms Türkiye’s deep historical and archaeological roots
ASPENDOS, Türkiye (MNTV) – A significant archaeological discovery in Türkiye has once again underscored the region’s status as a cradle of ancient civilizations.
Excavations in the ancient city of Aspendos have led to the unearthing of a near-complete marble statue of Hermes, the messenger god of Greek mythology, alongside fragments of other deities.
Türkiye, long known for its rich historical and cultural heritage, continues to reveal its deep connections to ancient civilizations through ongoing archaeological work.
The latest find at Aspendos, a Roman-era city located 40 kilometers east of Antalya, further cements its place as a historically significant settlement that has been home to thriving communities for millennia.
The fully intact Hermes statue, dating back to the late 2nd or early 3rd century AD, was discovered in the ruins of a monumental fountain (nymphaion) near the city’s entrance.
Standing 1.65 meters tall, the statue depicts Hermes holding a purse, a cloak, and a caduceus, with a carved ram at his feet. It is one of the rare examples of a Greek god statue found in such a well-preserved condition.
Alongside Hermes, excavation teams also uncovered fragments of other deities, including the heads of Aphrodite and Eros, as well as body parts believed to represent Artemis and Nemesis.
These artifacts, attributed to the Roman Imperial period, highlight the artistic and cultural significance of Aspendos as a key center of ancient life.
The discoveries are part of Türkiye’s “Heritage for the Future” initiative, aimed at preserving and showcasing the country’s vast archaeological wealth.
Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy described the findings as a testament to Türkiye’s deep historical roots, stating, “Aspendos, a silent witness of time, is revealing figures that have been hidden beneath the earth for centuries.”
With each excavation, Aspendos continues to unlock new chapters of history, reaffirming Türkiye’s place as a land where ancient civilizations once flourished.
