Libya calls on Lebanon to release Hannibal Gadhafi
-Son of Muammar Gaddafi, Hannibal is detailed in Lebanon in connection with disappearance of Shite leader.
TRIPOLI, Libya – Libyan judicial authorities have formally called on Lebanon to release Hannibal Gaddafi, one of Muammar Gaddafi’s sons.
He has been held in Lebanon without charge since 2015.
Gaddafi has been on hunger strike since June 3 to protest his detention without trial.
His health has deteriorated, and he has been hospitalized at least twice.
His detention in Lebanon is linked to the disappearance of Lebanese Shiite leader Moussa al-Sadr in 1978.
Gaddafi’s father, Muammar Gaddafi, is suspected of ordering al-Sadr’s death.
The Lebanese prosecutor’s office has referred the case to the investigating judge in the case of the disappeared al-Sadr, who is considering the Libyan request.
The disappearance of al-Sadr in 1978 has long been a sore point in Lebanon.
His family believes he may still be alive in a Libyan prison, although most Lebanese assume al-Sadr is dead.
Hannibal Gadhafi, who was two years old when al-Sadr disappeared, fled to Algeria after his father was overthrown and Tripoli was taken by opposition fighters.
He later reached Syria, where he was granted political asylum and remained until his abduction.
Syrian authorities have demanded that Gaddafi be returned to Syria.
