Lebanon submits complaint against Israel to Security Council over targeting UNIFIL
Lebanon has submitted a formal complaint to the U.N. Security Council against Israel’s repeated targeting of the U.N. peacekeeping mission in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
Lebanon’s mission to the U.N. in New York filed the complaint under the instructions of Foreign Minister Abdullah Bou Habib to the U.N. Security Council and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
Israeli tanks on Sunday forced entry into one of UNIFIL’s positions.
It was the latest in a series of violations and attacks by the Israeli military, which injured several peacekeeping troops.
The Lebanese diplomatic mission said the Israeli attack on UNIFIL is “a dangerous precedent and a blatant violation of international law jeopardizing the peacekeeping force’s mission.
It is calling for “a decisive and firm stance” against attacks that it says “amount to war crimes,” and holding Israel accountable for its violations to prevent their repetition.
Last week, the Israeli army injured four UNIFIL peacekeepers by shelling their posts in southern Lebanon.
UNIFIL was established as an interim force in 1978 to help restore peace in the region and as a confirmation of Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanon.
