Lebanon receives ancient artifacts from Switzerland taken out illegally
Recovered items mark a significant milestone in Lebanon’s efforts to reclaim its smuggled cultural and historical treasures
BEIRUT, Lebanon (MNTV) – Lebanon has successfully recovered three ancient artifacts that were illicitly taken out of the country and later seized by Swiss authorities.
The items, handed over by the Swiss Embassy, include a decorated blue glass bottle, a headless Aphrodite statue, and a small bronze statue from the 2nd-3rd century BC, according to Lebanon’s national news agency.
This achievement represents a significant step in Lebanon’s ongoing campaign to protect and reclaim its cultural heritage, both movable and immovable.
The successful recovery was made possible through the collaborative efforts of the Ministry of Culture, the Directorate General of Antiquities, and the Lebanese Embassy in Switzerland, which has been actively addressing issues related to Lebanon’s national heritage.
“This initiative reflects our dedication to preserving Lebanon’s rich cultural legacy and safeguarding it from illicit trade,” stated the Directorate General of Antiquities.
The Ministry emphasized its commitment to combating illegal trafficking and securing the return of as many artifacts as possible to their rightful place in Lebanon.
The recovery underscores the critical role of international collaboration in protecting cultural property.
Lebanon’s efforts to reclaim its cultural treasures are a testament to its commitment to preserving its rich history and ensuring that these artifacts remain accessible for future generations to learn from and cherish.
