Lebanese University stages play on family, migration
‘Above Me Below Me’ – a new theatrical production by Al Maaref University – tackles generational rifts and the emotional toll of migration, blending humour with heartache to reflect Lebanon’s evolving family dynamics.
BEIRUT, Lebanon (MNTV) – A Lebanese university is turning to the stage to tell a story that resonates far beyond its borders: the tensions and trials of modern family life, migration, and generational gaps.
Al Maaref University in Beirut has launched a new theatrical production titled “Above Me Below Me,” a blend of comedy and drama that explores the emotional and social challenges faced by Lebanese families today. The play is being performed on campus through April 19.
Written and directed by Mohammed Hussein, in collaboration with Mohammed Korani – who also stars in the play – the production is part of the university’s efforts to use the arts as a platform for public dialogue and community engagement.
The cast features local talents including Ahmed Atrisi, Ali Korani, Narjes Kheshish, Rayan Burji, Mohammed Reda, Haidar Abdullah, and Hassan Mithqal.
Set entirely in the home of an elderly father named Mahmoud, the play opens a window into the daily struggles of a family dealing with life’s mounting pressures and the shadow of migration. As Mahmoud reminisces about the past, conflict brews when his eldest son, Alaa, reaches a breaking point, exposing buried tensions between generations.
What follows is a raw yet relatable portrayal of family life in contemporary Lebanon – filled with laughter, frustration, and painful truths. The script captures the natural rhythm of real-life conversations, offering a mirror to families not only in Lebanon but also in regions grappling with youth emigration, economic instability, and generational disconnect.
Local newspaper Al Akhbar reports that the production reflects the university’s mission to combine academic pursuit with social consciousness.
In a statement, the Arts Club of Al Maaref University said the play was created in response to growing concerns about family breakdowns and rising youth migration.
“Above Me Below Me is a heartfelt portrayal of home life, rich with the humorous and poignant moments that define family relationships,” the team noted. “It speaks to both the laughter and sorrow experienced in households across Lebanon and beyond.”
The play is open to the general public and is especially recommended for school and university students, families, and organisations working in education, migration, or community support.
Through this initiative, Al Maaref University demonstrates how storytelling – even in the form of a small campus production – can shed light on pressing social realities and spark meaningful conversations.
