Leading Palestinian origin doctor receives Brazilian award
Award recognizes Suleiman’s work to preserve the memory and cultural identity of the Palestinian people and their original land
BRASILLIA, Brazil – A Palestinian-Brazilian specialist in infectious diseases, Dr. Jamal Suleiman, has been honored with one of Brazil’s highest awards.
The award by the Parliamentary State Council of Roots and Alien Cultures Communities (CONSECRE) recognizes Suleiman’s work to preserve the memory and cultural identity of the Palestinian people and their original land.
Suleiman is a second-generation Palestinian refugee born in São Paulo in 1959.
His father was expelled from Haifa during the 1948 Arab-Israeli war.
Suleiman has had a successful medical career, working as a physician and researcher at the Emilio Ribas Institute and training medical students.
He is also an active member of the Palestinian community in Brazil and works to raise awareness about the situation in Palestine.
In his acceptance speech, Suleiman said the award was a great honor for him and the Palestinian community in Brazil.
He also spoke about the importance of preserving Palestinian culture and identity, and said that food can be an effective way to do so.
Suleiman has appeared on popular programs on TV to promote Palestinian dishes, including the well-known makluba.

Suleiman is the second member of the Palestinian community to be honored by CONSECRE since its founding in 2001.
