Lawmaker vows impeachment over Supreme Court’s Trump ruling
Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has pledged to file articles of impeachment against at least one justice of the Supreme Court following its decision to grant former President Donald Trump immunity for official acts.
The ruling shields Trump from criminal prosecution related to his presidency, including charges stemming from the January 6, 2021, Capitol insurrection.
It also means that it is highly unlikely Trump will face a trial for his alleged role in the attack on the US Capitol before November’s election.
Ocasio-Cortez condemned the decision as an assault on American democracy and called on Congress to act against what she termed “authoritarian capture.”
Other progressive lawmakers, including Rep. Barbara Lee and Sen. Ed Markey, have also criticized the decision.
They say it has perilous implications for presidential accountability and democratic integrity.
Far-right Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito dismissed calls to recuse themselves from the case over alleged conflicts of interest.
In addition to them and Chief Justice John Roberts, the court’s three Trump appointees sided with the ex-president in the case.
Observers say calls for impeachment of the justices highlight deepening political divisions over judicial oversight and executive power.
