Largest body of lawyers in U.S. calls for action to combat Islamophobia
-Resolution sought support of Congresswoman Ilhan Omar’s bill to establish State Department office to monitor Islamophobia.
WASHINGTON – The largest association of lawyers in the U.S. has condemned Islamophobia and called on the U.N. and the American Congress to take action to combat anti-Muslim sentiments.
A resolution passed by the American Bar Association (ABA)’s House of Delegates called on U.S. government agencies to implement comprehensive strategies to combat Islamophobia.
Among the recommended strategies are public awareness campaigns about Islam and Muslims and the establishment of mechanisms for reporting Islamophobic incidents and hate crimes.
The resolution also called for support of Congresswoman Ilhan Omar’s bill to establish a State Department office to monitor Islamophobia, similar to the existing Office of Anti-Semitism.
While recognizing the U.N. efforts of declaring International Day to Combat Islamophobia, the lawyer’s body called for greater efforts to combat anti-Muslim hatred worldwide.
Before adopting the resolution, delegates discussed the increase in incidents of prejudice and attacks against Muslims.
They resolved to raise awareness of discrimination based on religion and to recognize it in law.
