Kenya, Uganda unite to save Mount Elgon
Historic pact creates East Africa’s second transboundary biosphere reserve, promoting conservation and eco-tourism on the vital mountain ecosystem
NAIROBI, Kenya (MNTV) – Kenya and Uganda have signed a landmark agreement to jointly conserve Mount Elgon’s delicate ecosystem, marking a major step in cross-border environmental collaboration.
According to The EastAfrican, the memorandum of understanding (MoU) establishes Mount Elgon as East Africa’s second transboundary biosphere reserve.
Both countries committed to joint management plans, community-based conservation, and eco-tourism development.
Officials emphasized that sustainable management could turn Mount Elgon’s biodiversity and landscapes into a major economic asset for local communities.
Over 5,000 trees were planted during the signing ceremony to rehabilitate degraded areas.
