Kashmiri leader condemns Indian move to amend Muslim endowment law
Kashmiri leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has strongly opposed the Indian government’s proposed amendments to Waqf of Muslim endowment laws.
Farooq warned changes would “disempower” Muslims, particularly in Jammu and Kashmir.
He criticized the amendments as direct interference in religious matters.
After protests by opposition parties, the bill has been sent to a joint parliamentary committee for further reading and scrutiny.
Critics argue the changes represent a government “takeover” of Waqf boards.
Meanwhile, Indian Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju defended the bill, claiming extensive consultations were held.
There are over 350,000 registered Waqf estates, over 800,000 immovable properties, and greater than 16,000 movable properties nationwide, according to the government-run Waqf Assets Management System of India.
