Justice for Malik: Two men plead guilty to murder amid row between Canada, India
Two men have pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the killing of Sikh businessman Ripudaman Singh Malik.
Malik had been previously acquitted of the 1985 Air India bombing that killed 329 people.
At the time of the bombings, investigators blamed them on Sikh separatists widely believed to be seeking revenge for the Indian Army’s deadly storming of the Golden Temple – the holiest shrine in the Sikh religion.
Tanner Fox and Jose Lopez entered their pleas in British Columbia’s Supreme Court, and face sentencing on Oct. 31.
Malik, shot dead outside his business in July 2022, once was linked to the Khalistan movement, demanding a separate Sikh state in the Indian province of Punjab.
This raised concerns about possible political motives behind his assassination, particularly amid escalating tensions between Canada and India on similar issues.
Malik’s family expressed gratitude for the guilty plea but urged the men to cooperate in identifying those who ordered the murder.
