Justice Department criticizes Memphis police for constitutional violations, racial discrimination
The Department of Justice has accused the Memphis Police Department of consistently breaching constitutional rights, specifically discriminating against Black people, and using excessive force.
This conclusion follows a detailed investigation sparked by the violent arrest and subsequent death of Tyre Nichols in January 2023.
Assistant U.S. Attorney General Kristen Clarke has revealed findings from the extensive review which included analyzing police data, body-cam footage, and numerous documents.
The report highlights severe misconduct, including an incident where police were seen using inappropriate force on a suspect for a minor violation.
In response to public outcry over Nichols’ death, the Memphis Police Department’s Scorpion unit was dissolved.
