Juneteenth advocate honored with house 85 years after family’s forced eviction
Ninety-seven year old Opal Lee, famed for her advocacy to make Juneteenth a national holiday, accepted the keys to her new Fort Worth home Friday.
The house stands on the same lot from which her family was driven by a racist mob when she was 12.
The house has been constructed in less than three months by local groups. Lee plans to host an open house, calling the home a place of happiness.
Reflecting on the 85th anniversary of the mob’s attack on her childhood home, Lee expressed gratitude to Trinity Habitat for Humanity for reclaiming the lot.
She is celebrated as the “Grandmother of Juneteenth.”
