July 15 coup attempt ‘attack on democracy, NATO ally,’ says former US ambassador
WASHINGTON (AA) – The defeated coup of July 15, 2016 in Türkiye was “an attack on democracy, and an attack on a NATO ally,” a former US ambassador in Türkiye and Iraq said on Friday, calling the perpetrator of the putsch a “terrorist organization.”
Speaking at the Turkish Embassy in Washington DC as it marked the sixth anniversary of the coup attempt, James Jeffrey called the coup attempt a “tragic event” which he said had failed thanks to the Turkish government and its people who risked their lives to stop it from succeeding.
The coup attempt left 251 people dead and 2,734 injured.
Ankara accuses US-based Fetullah Gulen of being behind a long-running campaign to overthrow the state through the infiltration of Turkish institutions, particularly the military, police, and judiciary.
