Judge halts deportation of Indian student supporting Palestine
A U.S. judge has blocked the deportation of Badar Khan Suri, an Indian Muslim student at Georgetown University.
Suri was detained by U.S. immigration agents earlier this week.
Authorities say Suri is promoting Hamas and antisemitism on social media.
Suri is doing PhD research on peacebuilding in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The university says it received no explanation for his detention.
Suri is being held at an ICE facility in Louisiana awaiting a court decision on his release.
His case follows that of Mahmoud Khalil, a Columbia University graduate, who remains detained.
Khalil, who is of Palestinian descent, also faces deportation for his advocacy for Palestine.
Civil rights activists say these actions are targeting campus activists and threaten free speech.
