Judge blocks Khalil’s deportation, Trump claims credit for arrest
A federal judge has halted the deportation of Mahmoud Khalil.
The ruling came late Monday, delaying the Trump administration’s efforts to remove him from the country.
Judge Jesse Furman ordered a hearing for Wednesday in New York City.
President Donald Trump took credit for Khalil’s arrest.
Posting on his Truth Social platform, Trump called Khalil a “radical foreign pro-Hamas student” and said more arrests would follow.
Khalil, who is Palestinian, was a permanent U.S. resident whose green card has been revoked.
He is married to a U.S. citizen.
Khalil was a negotiator between student protesters of Israel’s genocide in Gaza at Columbia University and school administrators last year.
His is the first publicly known deportation effort under Trump’s promised crackdown on student protesters.
Khalil was arrested on Saturday by Immigration and Customs Enforcement or ICE.
Hundreds took to the streets of New York City demanding the former Columbia University student’s release.
Protesters chanted slogans and waved banners calling Khalil’s detention a violation of free speech.
Police arrested several demonstrators.
