Jordan nears completion of key electricity link with Iraq
AMMAN, Jordan (MNTV) – Jordan is set to complete the second phase of its landmark electricity interconnection project with Iraq by the end of July 2025, marking a major milestone in regional energy cooperation.
The National Electric Power Company (NEPCO) has finished 95% of civil works for the project, with teams now focused on installing electrical equipment and conducting final tests.
Once operational, the upgraded link will significantly boost power supply to Iraq, reinforcing Jordan’s role as a key energy partner in the region.
The interconnection project, launched in October 2022 under the patronage of Jordan’s former Prime Minister Bishr Khasawneh and Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, began delivering electricity in March 2024.
During its first phase, Jordan supplied 40 megawatts to Iraq’s Rutba region through the national grid.
The upcoming second phase will extend the connection to al-Qaim, increasing total exports to approximately 150 megawatts.
Future expansions could eventually raise capacity to 500 megawatts, addressing Iraq’s growing energy demands.
The project’s progress follows a February 2024 agreement amendment between both countries, ensuring stable 132-kilovolt electricity delivery to Rutba.
This strategic interconnection underscores deepening Jordan-Iraq ties and highlights Jordan’s emerging position as a regional electricity hub.
With testing and equipment installation underway, Jordan remains on track to complete this critical infrastructure project by its July 2025 deadline, paving the way for enhanced cross-border energy collaboration.
