Japan begins exhuming WWII soldiers’ remains in Bangladesh
A Japanese team has begun the exhumation of the remains of 24 World War II soldiers from the Mainamati War Cemetery in Cumilla, Bangladesh.
The effort is part of Japan’s first project to return fallen soldiers’ remains home, nearly 80 years after they were captured by British forces.
This historic operation, which was initiated in September, follows a request from the Bangladesh Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
A seven-member forensic team from Japan arrived last week to begin the excavation, which uncovered bones, including skulls, on Sunday.
The work is expected to finish by Nov. 25, with local authorities and law enforcement providing support and security.
Mainamati War Cemetery, a historical site, contains graves of 738 soldiers from 13 countries, with 43 graves of Japanese soldiers, including those of the 24 being exhumed.
