Jakarta architects design elegant mosque with floating illusion
JAKARTA, Indonesia – Two Jakarta-based architects have rebuilt a mosque in Indonesia that could well rank among the masterpieces of modern architecture.
Dave Orlando and Fandy Gunawan designed the Nurul Yaqin Mosque in Palu to create a floating illusion.
Palu, is the capital and largest city of Central Sulawesi province.
By using concrete, brick, and blue terrazzo, they were able to create a simple and elegant space for worship with quite beautiful views along the Palu Bay.
Known for blending the structures with its surroundings, the architects have used their expertise to integrated the mosque into the water, creating a floating illusion.
The blue terrazzo used for the flooring captivates worshippers and visitors. The ornamental vaults and slits in the prayer hall lets in natural light and air.
The 99 names of Allah lasered into the stainless steel adorn the top of the building.
The 30 columns with ornamental arches that support the building blend harmoniously with the serene surroundings.
The mosque was inaugurated last year in July by Chairman of the Indonesian Mosques Council (DMI) Jusuf Kalla.
The mosque is windowless and glassless, allowing for natural ventilation and minimal maintenance.
A soft natural light penetrates from the slit-shaped mihrab, guiding worshippers to Makkah.
