Italy’s foreign minister, US counterpart discuss developments in Tunisia
ROME (AA) – Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani spoke by phone Tuesday with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken about political and economic developments in Tunisia.
During the call, Tajani, who is also Italy’s deputy premier, underlined the importance of constant coordination between his government and the US regarding Tunisia, according to a statement by the Italian Foreign Ministry.
He also reiterated the urgency for rapid, adequate and effective international economic and financial support for Tunisia, said the statement.
Highlighting that Tunisia is a central player for the security and stability of the Mediterranean, Tajani said Italy is ready to collaborate with other European Union countries and the US to contribute to the country’s stability.
“We must carry out joint action,” said Tajani, according to the ministry.
Last week, at Italy’s request, Tunisia was included in the discussions of the European Council, said Tajani, adding the foundations were laid for the EU to renew its commitment to assist Tunisia with a package of macroeconomic assistance.
