Israeli minister plans West Bank annexation by 2025
Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has declared plans to annex the occupied West Bank by 2025, urging officials to prepare for the move.
Speaking to his Religious Zionist Party, Smotrich emphasized that applying Israeli sovereignty to the region, referred to as Judea and Samaria, would end the Palestinian statehood agenda.
Smotrich expects strong support from incoming U.S. President Donald Trump, who has previously backed Israeli actions.
While Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has denied annexation plans during Joe Biden’s presidency, he recently suggested annexation could be revisited under Trump.
The move, which is widely opposed globally, is seen as illegal under international law, including the Fourth Geneva Convention.
The annexation would worsen tensions, with violence already escalating in the West Bank amid ongoing Israeli settler and military actions.
Israel has already unilaterally annexed East Jerusalem and the Syrian Golan Heights.
More than 700,000 Jewish settlers have colonized the West Bank since 1967, according to Israeli estimates.
