Two Palestinian prisoners, who had been on hunger strike for over four months, were released on Thursday, Feb. 24, from Israeli jails.
Hisham Abu Hawash, and Miqdad al-Qawasmi were two of the dozens of prisoners and administrative detainees who were on hunger strike against Israel’s policy of administrative detention.
Hawash and Qawasmi stopped their hunger strike following Israeli authorities’ respond to their demands after 141 and 113 days of hunger strike, respectively.
On Jan. 1, the International Committee of the Red Cross paid a visit to monitor Hawash’s condition and reported that the committee is “gravely concerned about his deteriorating health.”
“Every effort must be made to find a solution to avoid irreversible health consequences and the possible tragic loss of life,” they added.
Three days later, on Jan. 4, the European Union Delegation to the Palestinians (DPAL) expressed grave concern over his health and said that “the use of administrative detention without formal charge remains a longstanding concern.”
A father of five, Abu Hawash was arrested by Israeli authorities on Oct. 27, 2020 under administrative detention.
At least 500 of around 4,550 Palestinian inmates in Israeli prisons are administrative detainees, according to institutions monitoring the situation and treatment of prisoners.
