Israel dropped over 85,000 tons of bombs on Gaza, exceeding World War II total
The Israeli military has dropped more than 85,000 tons of bombs inside Gaza since October 2023, according to the Palestinian Environment Quality Authority.
The bombings include the indiscriminate use of white phosphorus munitions, prohibited under the U.N. Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons.
Palestinian officials told Wafa news agency the continuous bombing has caused the destruction of vast areas of agricultural land and contaminated soil with toxic chemicals.
They say this will obstruct agriculture in Gaza for decades.
Officials also note that Israel’s bombings and attacks have significantly damaged Gaza’s water sources causing polluted water to seep into groundwater basins.
This poses a health and environmental crisis that endangers hundreds of thousands of residents for future generations.
In June, the Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor reported Israel had dropped 70,000 tons of bombs inside Gaza since the start of the genocide, far beyond the bombing of Dresden, Hamburg, and London combined during World War II.
