Israel confiscates Digital Currencies Over Support for Hamas
Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz has signed a decree confiscating digital currencies which he said were intended to support the Palestinian group Hamas.
In a statement, the Defense Ministry said Gantz “signed an order to confiscate digital currencies amounting to 10.000 shekels ($3000) from 12 digital accounts.”
According to the statement, the money was in 30 digital wallets belonging to an exchange company in Gaza.
“The digital currency was confiscated in a joint operation of the Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism of the Israeli Army,” the statement said.
This was the third instance over the past year of Israel seizing digital currency directed towards funding of Palestinian organizations and institutions.
Hamas has not yet responded to the Israeli allegations.
