Israel completes laser defense system tests
JERUSALEM (AA) – Israel on Thursday completed tests of a high-powered laser defense system that intercepts mortars, missiles, anti-tank missiles and drones.
The Israeli Defense Ministry’s Directorate of Defense Research and Development and private defense technology company Rafael completed tests with the high-powered ‘Iron Beam’ laser interception system against a range of targets, said the Israeli Government Press office.
A video released by the Defense Ministry showed high-powered laser beams intercepting mortars, missiles and drones.
Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz said in a statement that the laser defense system is “first-rate breakthrough technology” and “a world-first invention,” adding they will work to get the system ready for use as soon as possible.
The laser interceptor is likely to be installed in the Gaza Strip and will complement the Iron Dome missile defense system.
