Israel claims sovereignty in West Bank
JERUSALEM (AA) – The Israeli government claims the sole right to exercise its sovereignty over the Palestinian territory of the West Bank.
Israeli Government Secretary Yossi Fox told this to the Legal Center for Arab Minority Rights in Israel called Adalah, on June 19.
The contents of the letter were published in Israeli media on Friday.
Fox said that the Jewish people have the sole right to the West Bank.
The letter was in response to a request aimed at halting recent decisions allowing the construction of hundreds of settlement units in the occupied West Bank.
Adalah said the Israeli government denies that Palestinians have a right to their land.
The head of Adalah’s legal department, Suhad Bishara, said the Israeli government’s response contradicts international law regarding occupied territories.
It is estimated that some 700,000 settlers live in 164 settlements and 116 outposts in the West Bank.
Under international law, all Jewish settlements in the occupied territories are considered illegal.
