Israel attacks Iran’s consulate in Syria killing 8
Iran says a blast in its consulate in Syria’s capital Damascus was the result of a strike by Israeli warplanes.
Eight people were reportedly killed, including Mohammad Reza Zahedi, an officer in an elite unit of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps, as well as several diplomats.
The incident has brought a dramatic escalation in Israel’s ongoing war on Gaza, in which it has also targeted other parts of occupied Palestine and southern Lebanon.
Iran has vowed to respond to the attack, with Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian describing it “as a violation of all international obligations and conventions”.
Israel has long targeted Iran’s military installations in Syria and those of its proxies.
However, Monday’s attack was the first time it had targeted the embassy compound itself.
Muslim countries including Iraq, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Pakistan, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates also condemned the attack.
