Islamic nation’s organization suspends Sweden’s status as special envoy
ISTANBUL (AA) – The 57-member Islamic countries grouping on Sunday suspended the special envoy status for Sweden.
The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) said the move followed repeated incidents of burning the holy book of the Quran in the European country.
The extraordinary meeting of OIC members on July 2 authorized Secretary-General Hissein Brahim Taha to take action against countries that allow desecration of the holy book.
Taha called on member states to also take sovereign decisions as well to express their stand.
Taha said burning copies of the Quran and other acts against Islamic figures and symbols are not ordinary incidents of Islamophobia.
He called on the international community to urgently implement international law, which prohibits any promotion of religious hatred.
He stressed the importance of abiding by the recently adopted resolution of the Human Rights Council UN.
The resolution addresses combating religious hatred that incites discrimination, hostility, or violence.
The OIC General Secretariat is preparing to convene an emergency meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers to further discuss the situation and take any necessary decisions.
