Islamic countries call for joint action to prevent Quran burnings
ISTANBUL (AA) – The 57-member group of Islamic countries has called for joint action to prevent Quran burnings in Western countries.
At an extraordinary meeting in Jeddah, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) called on the international community to stop such provocative acts.
The OIC statement also expressed disappointment that the authorities allowed the burning of the holy book.
The statement called on the OIC Secretary General to send a letter to the Swedish government on behalf of the member countries.
In a statement, the Swedish Foreign Ministry condemned the acts and said they did not reflect the views of the Swedish government.
It also called the burning of the Koran and other holy books an explicit provocation.
The statement said that racism, xenophobia, and related intolerance have no place in Sweden or Europe.
